New plan to limit expats’ stay

Published October 2nd, 2007

Gulf leaders at the GCC summit in December will consider a proposal stating that expat workers would only be allowed to live in the Gulf for a maximum of six years, reported Gulf Daily News. The proposal is being put forward by Bahrain's Labour Minister Dr. Majeed Al Alawi, who said the move is needed to preserve the identity of the Gulf, which he says is being diluted by foreign workers. He also said expats come from different cultural and social backgrounds that cannot assimilate or adapt to the local cultures.
