European shares rise ahead of Fed decision

Published September 18th, 2007

European shares rose early on Tuesday as financials regained some strength ahead of a broadly expected interest rate cut by the U.S. Federal Reserve, and British banks rose after the government guaranteed deposits at Northern Rock . By 0722 GMT, the pan-European FTSEurofirst 300 index was up 0.1 percent at 1,487.95 points.

The Fed is expected to cut benchmark interest rates for the first time since mid-2003 to protect the economy from a housing downturn and jittery credit markets.
