Broadband tech support slammed

Published August 20th, 2007

ISPs are making £34m a year out of customers calling technical support telephone lines, according to a report.

Though collectively they already make £2.8bn from broadband customers in the UK, many ISPs charge for technical support, with Orange’s helpline costing 50p per minute.

According to uSwitch.com, 19 million calls are made to these lines every year, with only 40 per cent of problems solved first time.

“To rake in an additional £34m just for helping customers to resolve technical hitches is just wrong. It’s interesting that sales lines are free to call,” said Steve Weller, head of communications services at uSwitch.com.
